By Jason Cranford Teague 2010 (Visual Quickstart Guide)
I love this book! It starts out with the newsflash chapters on what’s new, covers a chunk of HTML5 and then dives in. Most of the chapters cover what has come before (CSS 1 and 2 that is still in effect) while showing off the new cool features in CSS3. I wish the paper was of higher quality and color more prevalent for the price ($29.99), but the information makes up for the lower quality printing. Teague uses Alice in Wonderland by Carroll as a dummy site for the book. With each chapter and section he evolves and increases the complexity of the CSS used; every step is carefully covered so there are no giant leaps along the way. By the end of the book, you as the web designer, have truly crawled through the rabbit hole and emerged on the other side feeling awakened and inspired. His understanding of CSS is comprehensive and I get the sense that this book could have been much longer had he been given the time and leeway. I did feel that certain areas were simplified to save on space and I would really have appreciated the allowance for more detail when it comes to IE, Cross Browser Compatibility, and Sprites. That being said, he deeply covered the new @ font face, transform properties, text-transform, and combining multiple lines of code into short statements. This in conjunction with Beginning CSS by York is all you’ll need to become an advanced CSS designer! |
